The playbill handed to the audience at the Iroquois Theatre in Chicago carried two words about the building itself: “absolutely fireproof.”
On December 30, 1903, 602 people died inside it.
Both statements are true at the same time, and the gap between them is the entire reason modern exit doors work the way they do.
The National Fire Protection Association’s list of the deadliest single-building fires in United States history puts the Iroquois at the top, at 602 dead. It has held that place for more than a century.
A brand-new theater with a holiday crowd
The Iroquois had been open about five weeks. It was new, expensive and heavily advertised as safe.
December 30 was a holiday matinee. Tickets had been sold for every seat in the house plus hundreds more for the standing-room areas at the back, and those areas were so crowded that some patrons sat in the aisles, blocking the exits. Eddie Foy, who was on stage that afternoon, later wrote that he “had never before seen so many women and children in the audience.”
Partway through the performance, sparks from an arc light set fire to a muslin curtain over the stage.
Muslin is thin cotton cloth. A stage full of it, hung above open flame-hot lighting, is a fire waiting for a spark, and that is what the theater had.
The curtain that was supposed to be the answer
The “absolutely fireproof” claim was not pure marketing. It rested on a specific piece of equipment.
The Iroquois had an asbestos safety curtain, a fire barrier designed to drop between the stage and the audience and hold the fire on the stage side. That curtain was the safety case for the whole building.
It did not come down.
The curtain snagged partway through its drop and stopped. The flyman told the inquest it “would not drop below the height it had been fixed at.” The manager’s account of the attempt to lower it was three words: “It would not come.”
Instead of sealing the stage, the stuck curtain left a gap, and air rushed toward the fire. A wall of flame and smoke rolled out over the audience.
A chemist who examined the curtain afterward found it was largely wood pulp, and of no value in a fire.
The building’s one engineered protection failed in the first minutes.
The doors
Then the crowd ran, and met the part of the story that turned into law.
The Chicago Tribune counted thirty exits. On the afternoon of the fire most of them were useless. Contemporary press reports said fewer than half a dozen were in working order. Some were locked with heavy deadbolts to keep people without tickets from slipping in. Some were hidden behind drapery. Iron grates closed off some of the lesser-used stairways during performances.
The doors that were not locked opened inward, so the pressure of a crowd pushing to get out held them shut. And some were fitted with a bascule-type European latch that people in a dark, smoke-filled room could not work by feel.
A door that opens inward is not a door in a panic. It is a wall with a handle.
The dead were found stacked at the exits, and that detail is the one Chicago’s theater ordinances were rewritten around.
The contradiction in the playbill
The building was not consumed. In the sense that its builders meant the word, the structure held. The theater did not burn down, and on September 19, 1904, less than nine months after the fire, it reopened as Hyde and Behman’s Music Hall. In 1905 it became the Colonial Theatre.
“Fireproof” described the walls. It described the frame. It never described the people inside, and nobody in 1903 was required to make it mean that.
Smoke, heat and blocked exits killed 602 people in a building that was, by its own advertised standard, working as designed.
Chicago’s answer, written into its ordinances afterward, was not about walls. It was about how fast the room empties.
The man who changed his plans
Carl Prinzler was a hardware salesman who managed the builders’ hardware department at the Vonnegut Hardware Company of Indianapolis. By the company’s own account, Smithsonian’s and the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, he had intended to be at the Iroquois that afternoon, and his plans changed.
He went home instead. The theater filled with smoke and the people inside could not get the doors open.
Prinzler came at the problem the way a hardware man would. The failure was not fire chemistry. It was a latch. Doors had to be lockable from outside, because theaters have to stop people sneaking in, and they had to open instantly from inside, because theaters have to let people out. Nothing on the market did both.
He took the idea to his neighbor Henry DuPont, an architectural engineer, and the two of them built it.
The bar
What they produced was a latch released by a long bar mounted across the width of the door. No knob. No turning. No aim required in the dark.
A body falling against it opens the door. That is where the terms “crash bar” and “panic bar” come from.
Prinzler and DuPont filed for a patent in October 1908 on an “Emergency Exit Attachment for Knob Latches,” and a second in November 1908 on an “Emergency Exit Lock.” The two men received nine patents on exit hardware in all.
Vonnegut Hardware manufactured it. The trade name was built from the three surnames: VONnegut, DUPont, PRINzler. Von Duprin.
Nearly five years passed between the fire and the patents. The device is on commercial exit doors across the country now, and most people who push through one have never heard of the theater that produced it.
What went into the code
The hardware was one answer. The rulebook was the other, and it is longer.
Chicago rewrote its theater ordinances after the fire. Smithsonian’s account lists what went in: new standards for aisles and exits, fireproofing solution on scenery, connected fire alarms, limits on occupancy, the end of standing tickets, changed sprinkler requirements, rules for rooftop flues, and a red light kept burning over the exits during performances. The University of Illinois library’s guide to the fire adds outward-opening doors that stay unlocked, exit lights and flame-resistant scenery and curtains to the laws enacted in response.
Set that list against what the Iroquois had that day, and it reads as an inventory of the building. Unmarked exits. No adequate fire alarm. A fire curtain that turned out to be mostly wood pulp. An audience past capacity. Doors opening inward.
Every line in the ordinance is a line in the inquest.
The oldest rule in the building
There is a version of this story that treats 1903 as history. It is not history. It is the specification.
Every outward-swinging exit door, every lit red sign, every bar across a fire exit in a school, a stadium or a shopping center is a direct answer to a question asked by 602 people in a Chicago theater that had promised them, in writing, that it could not burn.
