Reading the table

* USAA scored highest, 740, but J.D. Power excludes it from the official ranking because membership is limited to military families. Among carriers open to everyone, Erie (705) and Nationwide (687) clear the 668 segment average. † Lemonade’s complaint index of roughly 3.5, about three times the expected volume for its size, is the highest in this table by a wide margin; it comes from 2023 to 2024 NAIC home-line data. NAIC does not publish renters as a separate line, so complaint and market-share figures use the homeowners multiple peril line, which contains renters policies.

Methodology

The order is the renters segment of the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, 14,511 respondents fielded July 2024 to May 2025, released September 16, 2025, segment average 668. AM Best ratings carry their 2025 or 2026 action dates. Complaint indexes are group-weighted home-line figures from 2026 review aggregations of the latest NAIC data; NAIC files renters complaints under the homeowners line, and this page says so rather than pretending a renters-only number exists. Scores are copied, never adjusted.
